How to Do the Biology Lessons

Each lesson consists of the following elements:

  • Objectives ("In this lesson, you will learn..."): These give you an idea of what you should expect to get out of the lesson.

  • A video lecture: This averages around 15 minutes long, and covers the material for the day.

  • Notes: the outline of the lesson, as shown in the video. Useful for review or studying for exams.

  • Keywords: A list of important words from the lesson. These don't need to be memorized...you just need to generally know what they mean, if you were to see them again.

  • Homework: Used to cement the key concepts from the lesson, and prepare for the quizzes and tests.

  • Homework answer key: For correcting the homework. Students are, upon their honor, not to look at the answers before actually doing the homework!

I recommend the following strategy for doing lessons:

  1. Watch the video

  2. Skim through the keywords

  3. Read the notes if necessary

  4. Do the homework

  5. Check the homework.

If you have opted to include homework as part of the overall class grade, the parent(s) should correct the homework against the answer key and record the grade, then give the corrected work back to the student to study.

If you opt not to count homework toward the final grade, students can correct their own homework at the parents' discretion.

The average unit consists of eight lessons, one quiz, one lab, and one test. This fits neatly into a two-week period as follows:

  • Monday: Lesson 1

  • Tuesday: Lesson 2

  • Wednesday: Lesson 3

  • Thursday: Lesson 4

  • Friday: Quiz and lesson 5

  • Monday: Lesson 6

  • Tuesday: lab at VIA

  • Wednesday: Lesson 7

  • Thursday: Lesson 8

  • Friday: Test

Most units will follow this pattern, but a few are only one week long, some are three weeks, and some have only six or seven lessons, to allow for holidays. You'll get a heads-up when these occur.

You are free to customize the schedule to suit your family, but hopefully this provides a helpful starting place. As always, if there's any way I can help make the course work for you, do not hesistate to reach out!
